Nandom District wants to be the first ODF district in Ghana

The Nandom District hopes to be totally ODF by the end of 2018. In fact authorities in the district want to declare the district ODF in August 2018.

As at the middle of July, 80 out of the 88 communities (91%) in the district were already verified ODF and the main partner, SNV, through the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for All Project, which had already ended, had agreed to extend the project by three more months to ensure that the entire district achieves ODF and becomes probably the first district ever to make that achievement in Ghana’s history.

According to the Upper West Regional Focal Person, one personality who has contributed enormously to the nandom success story if the Paramount Chief for the Area, Naa Dr Charles Puo-Uure Puobekyiir VII, who tasked all chiefs  under his jurisdiction to ensure that every household had a latrine.

According to the District Environmental Health Officer, Jerry, the District Authorities were working day and night to get the remaining eight communities ODF by the August deadline so that Nandom could be declared ODF ahead of every other district in the country.

Other districts in contention for total 100% ODF in the Upper West Region include Daffiama Bussie Issa, Sissala West and Wa West. Nearly 500 of the 1,100 communities in the Upper West Region are officially verified as ODF. Elsewhere in the country, the Tatale Sanguli District in the Northern Region has the greatest potential outdo Nandom in the districtwide ODF race with a similar August 2018 deadline.
